Election Night...

Tuesday night is spaghetti night for us, and it is one of the highlights of the week. But tonight is a special spaghetti night for two reasons. First, cereal was substituted for spaghetti. Second, tonight is election night. While studying for classes the election was being monitored in the background. Eventually Obama was declared the winner, the President-Elect of the United States of America. I would just like to say that this choice in our countries leadership was not unexpected by myself. I fully anticipated his election, and i honestly don't have too much of a problem with him taking office. However, I did find one thing quite problematic in listening to the interviews and commentators on the election. The only thing that I have heard from anyone is how wonderful it is, how elated everyone is that a black man was elected to the office of President of the United States of America. It is a major stage in our countries racial and ethnic development in terms of equality for all people. However, shouldn't the position of President of the United States of America be primarily concerned with how qualified the elected individual is to lead our country into the future, rather than his ethnicity (or gender for that matter!)? Maybe that's just me... Maybe I am wrong... Maybe the most important thing about this election is the fact that a black man has finally been elected by the majority of people in this great nation. It just seems to me that our country would be better served if we were to concentrate on his credentials, his ability to lead, and his ethical convictions.
